Prominent or protruding ears can cause individuals to be sensitive about their appearance. The ears significantly contribute to the balance and symmetry of a person’s face, and if they are not to your liking, you may feel self-conscious. Cosmetic ear surgery, or otoplasty, is offered at the Cancun, Mexico surgical facility of Perfection Makeover and Laser Center. Our talented cosmetic surgeons can adjust the size, shape, and position of your ears to achieve better proportion and facial balance. For more details about the procedure or to plan your trip to our center, please contact Perfection Makeover and Laser Center today.
Many of our otoplasty patients are young – between the ages of 4 and 14. As long as the child and parent provide consent for the surgery, our surgeons can alter the appearance of the child’s ears to a more pleasing shape and position. This may prevent the child from being teased or ridiculed by peers for having large or protruding ears. If your child complains about the appearance of his or her ears, listen carefully and consider calling or emailing us to get more information about the procedure. Unlike other features, which will change as the child ages, the ears will retain their position.
Otoplasty is typically performed to reduce the size of large ears, reposition prominent ears closer to the head, or correct other deformities in the ear’s structure (e.g., a tip that folds down and forward, or a missing curve in the outer rim or natural folds of the ear). After anesthesia has been administered, the surgeon makes incisions in the back of the ear. The surgical technique then varies, depending on the individual patient’s needs and goals. The surgeon may remove excess cartilage and skin, if necessary. Or, the surgeon may sculpt the existing cartilage and bend it closer toward the head. Excess skin may need to be removed, and the cartilage may be folded onto itself to reshape the ear. The incisions are closed with sutures, and the surgical scars are typically hidden within the natural crease of the ear, and fade with time. The entire surgery takes about two to three hours.
Otoplasty recovery is a fairly comfortable and complication-free process. The patient can usually return to school, work, and other normal activities after five to seven days. It is important to avoid any activities which may bend the ear for about a month after surgery.

This can be addressed quickly by our medical team, sometimes through the use of antibiotics.
