CLEFT PALATE

Cleft palate surgery is a surgical procedure that repairs the structures that make up the palatine vault and forms an opening in the palate that can extend into the nasal cavity.

OBJECTIVE:

Repair the palate so that the child can eat and learn to speak normally. A second operation may be necessary.

RESULTS THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED:

The results vary in each patient but usually heal without problems. The aesthetic result will depend on how significant the problem was. Consultation with an orthodontist is recommended for correction of teeth as they come out.

DURATION OF THE PROCEDURE:

From 2 to 3 hours depending on the severity of the case.

SURGICAL AND POSTSURGICAL ASPECTS

  • General anesthesia with sedation.
  • It is recommended from 1 to 2 days of hospitalization.
  • Complete recovery takes 4 to 6 weeks. Keep the wound very clean to avoid infections and complications. Liquid diet until it heals completely.
